Emir of Kuwait dies, aged 91

Emir of Kuwait Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah, has died.

The Kuwait royal court said he died on Tuesday at the age of 91.

Kuwait minister in charge of royal affairs, Sheikh Ali Jarrah Al-Sabah, said in a televised statement :

“With great sadness and sorrow, we mourn… the death of Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Jaber Al-Sabah, Emir of the State of Kuwait,”

Recall that the Emir had been receiving hospital treatment in the United States since July after undergoing surgery in Kuwait City.

The palace did not reveal any details on the nature of the emir’s illness or treatment, and where he died.

Sheikh Sabah al-Ahmad al-Sabah has ruled the oil-rich Gulf state since 2006.

He was regarded as the architect of Kuwait’s modern foreign policy.
