A pregnant lady and 5 of her kids are among the 7 people who were killed in a suspected exorcism in Panama.
According to reports, the victims, said to be from Ngabe Bugle indigenous group in Panama were rounded up by ten lay preachers before being mercilessly beaten, burned and hacked with machetes to make them “repent for their sins”.
It was gathered that the police were alerted by 3 villagers who managed to escape. According to authorities, they managed to free fourteen others, who had been tied up and beaten with wooden clubs and Bibles at the improvised church called The New Light Of God.
Investigators at the scene said they found a naked lady inside the building, along with knives, machetes, and a goat that had been ritually sacrificed. Many children and 2 women were injured.
Prosecutor Rafael Baloyes said: “They were performing a ritual inside the structure. In that ritual, there were people being held against their will, being mistreated.
“All of these rites were aimed at killing them if they did not repent their sins.”
A few miles away from the scene, the police revealed that they found the bodies of 6 kids and one adult in a grave. One of the suspects in the killing is the children’s grandfather.
“They searched this family out to hold a ritual and they massacred them, mistreated them, killed practically the whole family,” Mr. Baloyes said.
Local leaders of the area described the sect as “satanic” and have called for it to be immediately eradicated.
Sky News reported that the New Light Of God movement had only been operating in the area for about 3 months, and that on Saturday, one of the sect’s members claimed to have received a message from God telling him that everybody must repent or die.
It was further learnt that the police have apprehended 10 members of the church on suspicion of being responsible for the killings.
