Four people have been crushed to death by a truck at Pipeline Junction, Ogere Remo axis of Ibadan-Lagos Expressway, on Thursday, January 2nd, 2020 leaving four other passengers with various degrees of injuries.
Babatunde Akinbiyi, Public Relations Officer Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), revealed that the crash happened around 4.30 a.m. He went on to disclosed that the truck, with registration number TKP 653 XA, which was fully loaded with yams, lost control.
According to Akinbiyi, the red coloured Man Diesel truck, which was reportedly coming from the North and in bound Lagos, had 14 passengers, who are presumed to be the owners of the products, sitting on the top of the yams when the accident happened.
“The casualty was much because some of the passengers, who are also likely owners of the yam, were seating on the yam in the open space at the back. Thus, when it lost control due to overspeeding and poor visibility, (they) fell by its side, with the yam and vehicle falling on them” Akinbiyi said.
Akinbiyi revealed that four of the passengers died on the spot of the accident while the ones injured were immediately rushed to Idera Hospital, Sagamu. As at the time of filing this report, the agency’s spokesperson stated that the deceased were taken to FOS mortuary, Ipara Remo, while the truck has been taken to the Police Motor Traffic Division, Iperu-Remo.
Akinbiyi added that the command commiserates with the family of the deceased and the injured. He advised motorists to ensure their vehicles are well maintained, avoid over-speeding and also night travel as much as possible, especially now that its harmattan season, with its poor visibility.
